I have asked myself why Butterfly has to release a new blade in the Matsushita Pro series. The Matsushita Pro Alpha just follows the legacy of Matsushita Pro Model, Matsushita Pro Special blades. The Matsushita Pro Alpha is a medium fast blade - faster than Matsushita Pro Model.
The Matsushita Pro Alpha is suitable for modern defense. The Matsushita Pro Special blade is a very stable blade with arylate and carbon while Matsushita Pro Alpha has only arylate. The defensive blades from Butterfly is made of soft willow wood. The willow wood is great to absorb heavy impact, but it has a bad side of not generating not enough power for top spin game - the hit it okay. But the Matsushita Pro Alpha can generate good power is very suitable for top spin game because the blade is very flexible. Comparing with TSP BalsaFiber 3.5, the Matsushita Pro Alpha has more flexible face.
I have used tensor as well as tenergy rubbers on Matsushita Pro Alpha. I’ve used long pips on the backhand. The defensive chop strokes can generate decent underspin. In addition to that what I’ve liked about this blade is its ability to spin the ball because of its flexibility. On the forehand, it is not necessary to use high speed rubbers - it is okay to use rubbers like XIOM Yanus DF for defense and attack.
Except for countering, I don’t like high arc loops. The MPA (Matsushita Pro Alpha) has high throw while looping and have found issues keeping the ball low. The MPA has little inconsistant performance while looping. I prefer blade with good sweet spot which can give the same performance. To me, I have felt the sweet spot is not that high - the blade performs differently on various spots on the blade.
The blade will suit defensive players who has strokes similar to Koji Matsushita. Koji cuts the ball top to down against top spin. Against pushes also he adopt the same stroke. The Butterfly Matsushita Pro Alpha helps such players to have a very stable grip for such strokes. The manuevering is easy with its compact grip.
This blade is not for you if you hate vibrations. There are players out there who would like to feel the vibrations for controlling their strokes. If you are one of them, you will love this blade.
The Butterfly Matsushita Pro Alpha comes in SI and FL handle. The FL handle is thinner than regular FL handle that you see in offensive blades.
