The name speed glue came from the act of speed gluing. In 1970’s a Hungarian player named Tibor Klampar accidentally found the effect of some solvents on table tennis rubber. The manufactures of table tennis has started marketing these solvents which later became speed glue.
The chemical solvents in the speed glue after applied to the table tennis rubber creates holes in the sponge and the top sheet and fills it with gas. This process also expands the rubber. When the ball hits the rubber, the holes in the rubber act like spring and bounce the ball faster and spinnier. The effect will cease after few hours, so the glue can be applied again to attain the speed and spin again.
The ITTF has banned speed glue as of September 2008. The manufactures have now come with table tennis rubbers having the speed glue effect - the players dont have to speed glue anymore. The XIOM Omega III, Omega II, Omega I, ZETA, True Innovation are all having speed glue effect - more speed, spin, control and click sound.
