When I talk about hitting, I don’t mean playing top spin ball at all. I’m talking about you apply force on the ball, and the ball travels with less spin but with more speed forward.
Where do you hit the ball to generate the force and no spin at all? You can hit the ball at any point on the ball to generate force. This is an important thing to remember to generate more force. Let us take you are hitting the ball at its back with an open paddle (parallel to the floor). Without changing the racket angle, with the forward forearm movement, the racket should go more forward to generate force. Wherever you hit the ball, the forearm and wrist travel in a line which can make a 90 degree angle with the paddle’s face.
Without generating no curve at all, you can develope “hit” strokes to win points. A lot of women’s players in the world top level do more hits. It requires years of practice to develop strokes which can travel very close to the net height.
Here is a tip to improve your hitting skills. Get a short pips rubber of sponge size close to 1.5 mm. You don’t have to use this on your regular paddle. You can put this on a spare paddle which is very slower. Practice these hit strokes first being close to the table, and later 2 to 3 feets away from the table. After few weeks, without using the pips, you would be able to do this on an inverted rubber.
