Are there some players who are immune to spin? I mean you put any spin on the ball and these guys will simply return the ball back to your table?
Yes, there are. A number of players I have played against in the past have difficulty in judging the varierty of spin I return to them. They make mistakes. There is a certain kind of players I have seen dont have any problem. One group of people use years old rubbers. I have played against a player who uses a 10 years old paddle. The rubbers on that blade are some 729 rubbers which don’t respond to spin at all - they are hard and behave as anti sometimes. The second group of people are more modern than the previous group. They use very fast carbon blades with 729 Chinese rubbers having very hard sponges on them. These group of people are very immune to the incoming spin.
This can raise a question. Can I get such a combination and win all the matches? Yes, it is possible. Here is why you should avoid such a combination. In table tennis tournaments, the referees can possibly question the friction level of a rubber. He can spin the ball on the rubber, and can disqualify the player if he sees the rubber is dead or generating any spin. Secondly your opponent can be a smart player too.
Here some tips against these kind of players:
1. A 90% of the returns balls that come from such players don’t carry much spin. If the push, it would be coming at you with light underspin. If they top spin, it would be light too. But the balls will have power. So blocking is a good strategy against them. If you are a chopper, you will not have enough to chop as the balls does not carry any spin.
2. These players primrily use open rackets. So, an unexpected heavy top spin loop can put them out of return.
3. Use 3rd or 5th ball attacks and get points by yourself. Don’t expect your opponent to make mistakes. They may not probably.
