The Port Orford Cedar is from the family of Hinoki wood. This wood is seen in Oregon and California in America. It is not a Cedar but a variety from Cypress or Hinoki wood. The Port Orford Cedar is close to white in color. It has very close grains. I’ve heard the POC is exported from American to countries like Japan. The POC resembles to the Kiso Hinoki in Japan and a cheap alternative for the expensive Japanese Hinoki. The Japanese use it to make Sushi bars and table tennis paddles.
The Port Orford Cedar has a soft feeling. The wood is hard to generate very powerful top spin shots. This wood shines in its ability for high dwell time, control and high catapult effect. The hard rubbers like Chinese Hurricane III, Butterfly Tenergy, XIOM Omega II Asian behave very much like soft rubbers on Hinoki wood. The high thow angle does help spinny underspin shots, however defensive rubbers like long pips don’t behave defensively.
The Port Orford Cedar has behaviors similar to Kiso Hinoki of Japan but it is not a substitute.
