I have enough heard of this problem already. The other day, a player from India has called me to ask about the water based glue. The players around the world are becoming aware of the ITTF speed glue ban, and they all want to switch to VOC free water based glue. The players are struggling to find the right water based glue.
The first question I’m asked normally is whether the water based glue really work? Secondly, they all want to know which water based glue in the market is easy to remove. I’m talking about two kinds of player here. The first category of people who like to glue the rubber on to the blade and forget about it. The second category of people who used to speed glue before, and they want to peel the rubber off and apply glue before the play every day.
Does the water based voc free table tennis glue work? Yes, it works. The water based table tennis glue can create great bond between the rubbers and the blade. It works great on a new blade. The older paddles which has a lot of deposit of chemicals will have problem with water based glue. If you have problem with your paddle which is few years old, get a new paddle.
Does the water based voc free table tennis glue work on all the rubbers? Not easily. The sponge that absorbs a lot of glue will require few layers of water based glue to generate the bond - Butterfly Tenergy falls into this category. The XIOM Omega III requires a very thin layer of water based glue. The sponge of TSP Curl series require a very thin layer only.
The voc free water based table tennis glue comes in light or thick quality. The XIOM I-BOND 25 ml contains thin glue. The XIOM I-BOND 500 ml is thick. I have personally used both the glues, and I like the XIOM I-BOND 500 ml a lot. I regulary glue before the matches, and the thick glue keeps me going for a while. The players who dont glue regularly does not need a 500 ml.
The strong bond adds up another headache for the regular gluers. The table tennis blade absorbs a great amount of the glue, but the rubber still absorbs a good percentage of glue. As I have said, it varies for different rubbers. The glue build ups and it adds weight and performance difference to the rubber. So, occassionally we need to remove it. I have written in a different blog about removing the water based glue build ups from the rubber, so I dont want to repeat here. It is easy to remove the water based voc free glue from the table tennis rubbers. It needs only little patience and care.
There are water based glues from different manufactures available in the market: (1) ANDRO Free Glue (2) DHS No. 15 Aqua glue (3) JOOLA Aqua (4) XIOM I-BOND (5) TSP Water Bond (6) NITTAKU Finezip
The water based voc free glues from manufactures are normally orderless. The XIOM I-BOND 25ml has good attractive scent. The XIOM I-BOND 500 ml does not have that attractive smell, but it has some scent. The scent is similar to DOVE bath soap. The TSP Water Bond does not have any smell.
The water based glue has to be kept at a room temperature. You should not keep it in a high or low temperature places. There will be a 5 to 10% evaporation you can notice while the glue is kept to use for longer term.
To answer the question which water based glue is easy to remove from the table tennis rubber, I would say thick glue which comes in large bottle is easy to remove.
XIOM and TSP VOC Free Table Tennis Glue (both thin and thick, small and large bottles).
