Are you one of those who hate to warm up, and then jump to matches directly? Sorry, this writing is not for such players.
The first thing I do when I reach the club is warm up. Am I honest about it? Yes. However, I have some restrictions though. Some clubs don’t allow more than 2 minutes of warm up because of the large crowd. In some clubs I go little late and the players who have played already push me to start the match immediately.
What is warm up? It is two fold. It is both physical warm up, and there is game warm up. In the game warm up, you call your favorite partner to hit with you. You can make it longer to 30 minutes or to 1 hour.
There is something you should be looking to perfect during warm up. I call it finding your “safe zone”. This is especially important for an equipment junkie. And also for someone changing their equipment.
The table tennis ball is a very light ball. It’s travel in the air, speed and rotation depend on many factors. An intelligent player irrespective of his level consider these varying factors to perfect his shorts. The “safe zone” I talk about here is the distance from the table tennis net to you where you stand, so that you can safely land ball on the other side. To find the safe zone, you have to move closer or further away from the table, then hit or loop the ball to make sure you can land the ball anywhere on the table safely.
