Water is an enemy to wood. The water content in water based glues can soften the wood surface. The wood expands and later contracts, so slowly the blade loses its performance. The regular gluers will see this problem faster than an occasional gluer. The ping pong blades made of woods like hinoki or teak are resistant to water, but many woods are not. On certain woods the water based glue makes stronger bond, makes dry deposits of glue. They are hard to remove and removing takes time. The strong bond can damage the blade while removing the rubber from the blade - some pieces of wood can come out from the blade.
Some of those headaches can be minimized if blade protector is being used. They are water based too but dries fast. I regularly use XIOM I-SURE. It is not necessary to use a blade protector like XIOM I-SURE before applying the glue everytime. I use it on a new blade, and every three to four weeks.
How to use XIOM I-SURE on a table tennis blade:
1. The XIOM I-SURE bottle comes with a sponge at its end. Just press the tip on different areas of the blade. Spread the solution evenly on the blade. You can apply the XIOM I-SURE on a used blade too. If it is a used blade, clean the surface of the blade before putting the solution on.
2. Allow 12 hours to dry.
3. You can apply one or more coatings of the protector. Players who regularly glue like every week and put a large amount of glue are advised to use more coatings. Please be aware that more coatings can add the some additional weight to the blade.
4. Use the XIOM I-SURE again after two to three weeks.
The XIOM I-SURE comes in a 25ml bottle. It will last for at least ten coatings. It costs $9.99.
The water based glues and protectors are free from VOC. A lot of players like them. However, the dark side of water based solutions is that it can damage the wood. The damage can be prevented to an extend with water based blade protectors.
